"They mah hang me, but they can't hang my soul."
I found this in the archive at the Hackettstown Historical Society. It did not come with a source. I suspect this was printed in the Express-Times, but I really have no idea.
I find it ironic that you post a picture of the TITUS gravestone but not one of Matilda Frances SMITH. Is Erik Anderson just creating a sensationalism for himself??? Best, Bob Smith Waterloo Smith Historian
hi Bob- You are just being a jerk now. If you're so keen on that Tillie Smith Monument, why don't you put it on your own blog? And look up the proper use of the word ironic.

Mary Shelley's Frankenstein
"I did confess, but I confessed a lie. I confessed, that I might obtain absolution; but now that falsehood lies heavier at my heart than all my other sins. Ever since I was condemned, my confessor has besieged me; he threatened and menaced, until I almost began to think that I was the monster that he said I was. Dear lady, I had none to support me; all looked on me as a wretch doomed to ignominy and perdition. What could I do? In an evil hour I subscribed to a lie; and now only am I truly miserable."
Sentimentality, the ostentatious parading of excessive and spurious emotion, is the mark of dishonesty, the inability to feel; the wet eyes of the sentimentalist betray his aversion to experience, his fear of life, his arid heart, and it is always, therefore, the signal of secret and violent inhumanity, the mask of cruelty. -James Baldwin
